There has been a lot of chatter about the new ChatGPT. Most people, myself included don’t really have a handle on how ChatGPT will affect your business. It sounds a little bit like Siri on steroids. To me, the details don’t matter. What matters is what ChatGPT means for my business and that of my clients. Clearly, AI will assist in productivity management, but it can also assist in your SEO.

It’s another dreaded “disruption.” It can happen in any industry. But, few predicted it would happen to the mighty Google so quickly and possibly so thoroughly.

Opinion: ChatGPT is challenging Google’s control over internet search — setting up an epic clash of AI titans

If ChatGPT does actually disrupt the search engine industry, local businesses will have to rely, more than ever, on the quality and quantity of actual content on their websites.

“ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.” – https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/

Chat GPT works by being able to answer questions and present information based on data it can find on the internet. In a nutshell, it searches the internet and provides information in a text/paragraph format rather than the “list of related links” we have all become accustomed to.

For a local business, this means if you want to be included in the information you will have to already have the requested information posted online. Website information, including: about pages, blog posts, and descriptions of services will be more important than ever.

For a local business to remain relevant after the “death” of search engines, creating current and relevant content will be vital. If your website features 2 blog posts you put on your website in 2018, you are out-of-date and the posts don’t matter as much anymore. Update the info and romove old, irrelevant posts.

Businesses that benefit most from this new disruption will be the one who have a constant stream of relevant content that is providing up-to-date, interesting information for consumers.
